Abstract/Summary

Report on an archaeological excavation conducted on land at the Spittlegate junction of the A1, to the south of Grantham, to preserve by record known archaeological remains prior to the construction of a new grade separated junction. A probable Bronze Age settlement was encountered, with enclosure or boundary ditches, some of which may have been repurposed natural channels. A ~40m length of a pit alignment ran parallel to the northernmost of these ditches, and appeared to continue beyond the limit of the excavated area. Three ring ditches were observed within the settlement area. Two of these, which had diameters of between 7-8m with internal pits and postholes, are probably the remains of roundhouses. The third larger feature had a diameter of approximately 18m, and was interpreted as a probable round barrow. An undated east-west aligned trackway with a metalled surface and wheel ruts was noted at the southern end of the site, and an undated alignment of postholes probably representing a fence line was observed to the north of the settlement. Finds recovered include a large number of Bronze Age pot sherds and a small number of Mesolithic or Early Neolithic worked flints.
