Mud and Stud Buildings Project

Lincolnshire has a rich built heritage with marvellous buildings like Gainsborough Old Hall, Boston’s Stump, Lincoln Castle and Belton House.  But have you ever thought about the houses which the ordinary people lived in?

The Mud and Stud Buildings Project is exploring a particular way that people in Lincolnshire built their houses – and the buildings they worked in – in the past.  Mud and stud is found all over Lincolnshire, but almost nowhere else.  Sadly the buildings are vulnerable and we’re losing them at an alarming rate.  The project hopes to find and understand all of the surviving buildings, so that we can help owners to look after them and keep them usable for many decades to come, as well as enabling people to connect with their place’s heritage.

We believe that mud and stud buildings are part of our shared heritage – whether you are Lincolnshire born and bred, or have arrived in the county more recently.   And we want to work with anyone and everyone in the county – homeowners, community groups, businesses – to discover the breadth of that heritage so that we can understand the buildings, the challenges which they present and how to best to enable them to adapt to modern lifestyles, so that people can enjoy them for centuries to come.
