Full Description

A probable Bronze Age settlement was revealed during an archaeological excavation at the Spittlegate junction of the A1 in 2018. The settlement was divided by enclosure or boundary ditches, some of which may have been repurposed natural channels. Iron Age pottery was recovered from the upper fills of several ditches, indicating possible continuity of use into this period (see MLI128089). A ~40m length of a pit alignment ran parallel to the northernmost of these ditches, and appeared to continue beyond the limit of the excavated area. Three ring ditches were observed within the settlement area. Two of these, which had diameters of between 7-8m with internal pits and postholes, are probably the remains of roundhouses. The third larger circular feature had a diameter of approximately 18m, and was interpreted as a probable round barrow. An undated but possibly contemporary alignment of postholes probably representing a fence line was observed to the north of the settlement. Finds recovered include a large number of Bronze Age pot sherds. {1}{2}
