Full Description

A magnetometry survey was conducted on land at Spittlegate Junction, Grantham, in 2016. Two roughly triangular groups of linears forming enclosures were encountered, along with a possible pit alignment and a probable palaeochannel towards the south of the survey area. {1}{2} Subsequent archaeological excavation on the same site revealed two phases of activity - a Bronze Age settlement and a field system that may have been maintained until later in the Iron Age (see MLI128086 and MLI128089). Some of the excavated features provided no dating evidence, however, including a ditch that may have formed part of the Iron Age field system, a number of pits, and an east-west aligned trackway with a metalled surface and wheel ruts at the southern edge of the site. The possible pit alignment identified during the prior geophysical survey was not encountered. {3}{4}
