Description

Thirty eight trial trenches were excavated to inform the proposed construction of a new commercial glasshouse development on land off Clay Lake Bank, Spalding. Two phases of Roman activity were encountered. In the northeast corner of the site, a group of Early Roman ditches was revealed. Samples from these features revealed evidence of crop processing and the use of peat as fuel. Further south, the evaluation revealed an enclosure system of 3rd-4th century AD date, from which a small assemblage of residual Early-Middle Iron Age briquetage was recovered. Across the whole site, undated and Medieval boundary or drainage ditches were recorded, likely representing several phases of post-Roman agricultural use of the site. The excavation of thirty geotechnical test pits and two boreholes was also monitored during the evaluation, but no further archaeology was identified. {1}{2}
