Full Description

A small assemblage of residual briquetage fragments was recovered from Roman and later contexts on land to the south of Clay Lake Bank, Spalding during a programme of trial trenching in March-April 2018. Though found in Roman contexts, all but one fragment lacked the characteristic 'bleaching' of the surface common in briquetage of this period, giving the assemblage a more likely date of Early to Middle Iron Age. {1}{2} During a subsequent strip, map and sample excavation on the same site in July-September 2018, a further 314 pieces of briquetage were recovered from Roman and later contexts. Unlike the briquetage recovered in the trial trenching excavation, analysis of the assemblage indicated a probable Late Iron Age date due to both the lack of 'bleaching' and the inclusion of organic material in the fabric. {3}{4}
