Description

An archaeological excavation was undertaken on land to the south of Clay Lake Bank, Spalding, to preserve by record known archaeological deposits prior to the construction of a new commercial glasshouse development. A field system and possible evidence of a building of 2nd-3rd century AD date were revealed. Finds including animal bone and sherds of Roman fineware pottery suggest occupation on or near the site during this period. A second phase of activity included the recutting of many of the earlier ditches, though the paucity of finds from the recuts indicates reuse of the site was likely short-lived. {1}{2}
