Full Description

Farmhouse dating from the 19th century with 20th century alterations. The building incorporates surviving fragments of 13th and 14th century stonework, from a medieval monastic grange which formerly occupied the site (see MLI52303). The farmhouse is built of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, and features a hipped slate roof with three brick stacks. It is of two storeys, with a four-bay front with off-centre 20th century half glazed door with hood, flanked by single 20th century four-light windows. Inside, at the left hand end is a small vaulted room with a 13th century pointed window with a single chamfered rear arch. Opposite the arch is a matching single chamfered opening, which leads to a room with a 14th century quadripartite vault, comprising two hollow mouldings and a central filleted roll moulding. The ribs spring from triple shafted responds with naturalistic foliage and meet at a central boss which has since disintegrated. On the inner eastern wall the responds support an arch with two filleted roll mouldings with central roll. In the floor beneath the suspended timber floor is a small area of plain floor tiles, black and yellow. In the hall of the farmhouse the moulded reveal of a large window can be seen. In the bedroom over, the upper part of a reticulated traceried window is preserved, and the top is visible in the roof space over. The 19th century roof re-uses 17th century timbers. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2} It has been suggested that the fragments of medieval masonry are remains of a former chapel on the grange. Two 1960s photogrpahs of the stonework are held by Lincoln Central Library, in their Lincolnshire Illustrations Collection. {3} The remains of the grange and medieval stonework were surveyed and recorded by the Royal Commission. The history of the site and the surviving remains of the grange are extensively discussed by Everson and Stocker. {4}{5}{6}
