Full Description

Site of a former monastic grange of Barlings Abbey. Grange de Lings is a corruption of Grange de Barlings Abbey, and land in this area was gifted to the Premonstratensians of Barlings by the Bardolf family and their successors as Lords of Riseholme, in several grants from the late 12th century and later. The monks were granted a free warren in 1253 and the grange is mentioned in patent rolls in 1325. At the dissolution the land was granted to Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. The principal archaeological remains are the medieval building fragments encapsulated in the present farmhouse (see MLI96959), although some earthworks also survive around the farmstead. These earthworks are principally comprised of a broad low bank orientated north to south, to the west of the farmhouse, with other slight traces around. The grange, its history and the surviving remains are extensively discussed by Everson and Stocker. {1}{2}{3}{4}
