HER Report no. 1827

Abstract/Summary

Report on a programme of archaeological evaluation comprising a single 3m x 3m trial trench excavated on land at St John's Street, Holbeach, to inform the construction of a proposed residential development. Archaeological features were encountered at a depth of 900mm below surface level. Four pits and a posthole of Late Medieval date were identified. Finds recovered from these features included an iron hoop from a wooden barrel possibly intentionally placed at the bottom of a pit, as well as waterlogged leather offcuts and pottery dating to the 15th century. The presence of post-Medieval and modern pits and postholes was also noted. Envirnomental sampling of several features was undertaken, but was inconclusive.
