Full Description

Former Baptist chapel, later used as a Salvation Army Headquarters building. Built in 1767 with alterations in 1843 and in the 20th century, and constructed of red brick, chequered with some yellow brick, with painted ashlar dressings. Had a corrugated iron roof at the time of listing. Of two storeys, with a single bay east front raised in chequered brick in 1843. Prominent quoin stones are to the eastern gable. The east gable has a central doorway with moulded wooden doorcase, entablature and double, partially glazed, doors. There are two weathered gravestones attached to the northern elevation. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2}{3} The chapel was rebuilt in 1839, though was considerably altered in 1843. The building was sold to the Salvation Army in 1929. {4}{5}{6} The chapel was built in 1767 for a newly formed Particular Baptist church. It was stated in the 1851 Census of Religious Worship to have been 'rebuilt in 1839', when the building was likely heightened and extended to the west (although this may have been done during the 1843 alterations). The building was still in use as a Baptist Chapel in 1906, when it is labelled as such on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. The building subsequently passed to the Salvation Army, although the exact date of transfer is uncertain. The building was constructed of brick with ashlar quoins, surviving well to the east front and a smaller part of the north-west corner. The gabled east end has a central entrance with a segmental-arched head and a later wooden surround. An extension at the west end links the chapel to an earlier house. {7}{8} The building was converted to use as offices in 2001, with alterations made at this time including the replacement of the corrugated iron roof with Welsh slate. A brief photogrpahic survey of the building was conducted in November 2020, prior to conversion of the property to residential use. The investigation showed that some historical fittings still survived inside the building, including the internal chapel balcony (now largely constricted by the inserted office floor directly above), further gravestones from the original graveyard now mounted inside, and a large decorative ceiling rose in what is now the first floor. {9}{10}
