Full Description

PRN 30146 Parish church constructed c.1150, with 13th, 15th and 16th century alterations. Lengthened in brick in the late 18th century. Restoration c.1914-17. Coursed ironstone and limestone rubble, limestone ashlar, red brick with slate, plain tile and lead roofs. Bell turret, nave with north aisle, south porch, rectangular chancel with north vestry. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Norman and Early Engish. Chancel and south part of nave date to the 17th century with brick additions.{2}{3} A church is mentioned in the Domesday Book. {4} A scheme of test pitting and monitoring relating to the construction of a new path and associated conduit was undertaken between September 2022 and February 2023. The northernmost test pits recorded human remains, while the southernmost pits did not. The monitoring of the path suggested a possible former boundary wall, outside of which the land had been landscaped and its level reduced, and that the churchyard had been enlarged at a later date to include the land formerly enclosed within the boundary wall. {5}{6}
