Full Description

An inhumation burial of Iron Age or Anglo-Saxon date was encountered during a programme of trial trenching on land off Scothern Road, Nettleham, in February-March 2025. The skeletal remains were poorly preserved, and only the right femur, fragments of the pelvis, rib cage, vertebrae, arm and skull were present. The body appears to have been laid in a supine position, oriented east-west with the head at the west end. A bone comb, highly fragmented, and a shale spindle whorl were recovered from beside the burial. The comb was estimated to be of Anglo-Saxon date, while the spindle whorl was considered, on typological analysis of the diameter of the central hole, to be probably Iron Age. {1}{2}
