Description

A heritage impact assessment and geophysical survey by magnetometry were undertaken in advance of a planning application for a petrol station at land off Peterborough Road, Market Deeping. The geophysical survey revealed a number of positive linear features attributed to modern agricultural trends, as well as some more distinct linear features that may represent boundary or drainage ditches. A pair of north-south aligned parallel linear features in the southwest corner of the site may have flanked a former trackway, and a potential rectangular feature in the northeast corner of the site may represent a former enclosure ditch. {1} A subsequent programme of trial trenching (see ELI13981) revealed a single post-medieval gulley at the west end of the site, which matched one of the positive linear features assumed to be modern agricultural in origin. Machine scars and changes in the natural deposits were revealed to be the cause of the other readings, with the exception of the possible rectangular enclosure, which was not identified during trenching.
