Abstract/Summary

Report on a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording conducted on the groundworks for a new vestry and the replacement of toilet facilities at the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Bourne. The work was undertaken in two phases, in August-September 2017 and May 2019. During the initial removal of the old toilet block, a limestone footing for the base of a drain was encountered. This appeared to be 19th century in origin, and is depicted on an 1868 map of the church, running east. A rectangular brick structure, possibly a coal store or the base of a water tank, was also encountered, and an early 20th century brooch recovered from its rubble infill. Below these foundations was a construction trench containing a flint and limestone wall, thought to be the remains of the east wall of the Medieval abbey parlour. Five sherds of (residual) Roman pottery from a single vessel were recovered from between the courses of this structure. During the second phase of works to the west of the tower, a vertical-sided feature containing pink limestone rubble was recorded.
