Title Archaeological Mitigation: Land to the North of Gonerby Lane, Greaty Gonerby
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2016

Abstract/Summary

The archive on a scheme of archaeological mitigation, consisting of seven trenches and two excavation areas was undertaken on land to the north of Gonerby Lane. The work was undertaken prior to a proposed development of a solar farm. The evaluation work was done to determine the results of a geophysical survey undertaken in 2014 (ELI14606). Previous work indentified little of archaeologcial value in the area. The primary focus was a series of linear features in the southeast of the site. The trenching in this area revealed in situ and robbed out stone footings and appear to be foundations of a large building. Finds recovered from the work suggest the site was a high status place dated from the 2nd to the 4th centuries. It is believed the site could be a possible villa estate, though this has not been confirmed. A number of pits were also excavated in this area. This pits contained evidence of burning or heating, indicating a zone of industrial activity or waste dispiosal, possibly associated with the estate complex.
