Full Description
Former rectory, now a home for the elderly, built c.1870. Constructed of stock brick, with red brick and some ashlar stone used for dressings. The building has a slate roof with stone coped gables, decorative eaves and two ridge stacks, with a further single stack to the rear and a single projecting stack on the front. The structure is of two storeys, with a three-storey bay above the door. The five-bay front has the doorway to the right with pointed overlight, a gabled ashlar hood mould and plank door. The doorway is flanked by single narrow fixed lights with pointed heads and small gabled hood moulds. Two narrow plain sash windows are to the right, and two three-light plain sashed windows are to the left, with the projecting stack beyond. Above to the right a pair of narrow plain sashes, flanked by red brick crosses with red brick decorative motif above. Above the door are two plain sashes with pointed heads and red brick decoration, with three narrow plain sashes above those, and a conical roof above. Two two-light plain sashes are to the left. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2}
Pevsner believed the rectory to have slightly earlier origins, dating the structure to 1839, though with substantial additions by F.H. Goddard dating to 1866. He described the building as being designed to a Gothic style, and constructed of white brick, with a porch tower and pointed-arched tympana in red brick. {3}
Use of the building as a care home had stopped by early 2004, when planning applications to convert the building into apartments were first submitted. After several years laying unused, the works to convert the building were completed in about 2012. {4}
