Full Description

Former vicarage dating from the 17th century, with 18th and 19th century alterations. Now in use as a private residence. Constructed of rendered brick and features a slate roof with stone coped gables, two gable and a single ridge chimney stacks. The building is of two storeys with attics, and has a seven-bay front. The off-centre panelled and glazed door is covered by a 19th century brick porch with Gothic pointed sidelights, decorated eaves and gable. This is flanked to the right by two glazing bar sashes with a canted bay window with glazing bar sashes further on, at the end of a projecting wing. The interior has sweeping early 19th century stairs with plain square section balusters (three to a tread), and shaped curving handrails. The west (garden) front has two, two-storey canted bay windows and an early 19th century wooden doorcase, first floor band and pilasters which divide the facade into 4 bays. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2}{3} Several yard surfaces of probable 19th century date were revealed in September 2013, during the archaeological monitoring of the installation of new services to the rear of The Old Vicarage, Church Street, Caistor. The surfaces were of rough construction, comprising worked stone, re-used handmade bricks, limestone and ironstone fragments and areas of mortar spreads. It was thought highly likely that the various surfaces exposed all formed components of a single rear yard surface that extended southwards from The Old Vicarage to the associated nearby outbuilding and former stable range. {4}{5}
