Full Description
The listing description for Thatched House describes a cottage dating from the late 18th century, which underwent alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was originally built of mud and stud, which was encased with 18th and 19th century red brick, and now has some colour washed render. The building has a thatched roof with single ridge and gable stacks, and two eyebrow dormers with 20th century glazing bar casements. It is single-storey with attic, and has a three-bay front with an off central doorway with thatched porch on slender timber columns and a panelled door. A two-light sliding sash in 18th century brick with wooden lintel is to the right. A single three-light sliding sash in 19th century brick with segmental head is to the left of the doorway. {1}{2}
A scheme of historic building recording undertaken to Level 3-4 suggested an earlier possible date for the building with the core of the building on the ground and first floors being of late 16th or 17th century in date, encased by later alterations and extensions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The original dwelling comprises a timber frame mud-and-stud infill with a brick or stone plinth. Much of the original timber has been either replaced by or clad in brick. {3}
