Full Description

A cottage thought to be of probable late 18th or early 19th century date, with later alterations and additions including part conversion to a butcher's shop. It was constructed of brick with rusticated stucco quoins and has a pantile roof. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} The Old Cottage was the subject of a programme of historic building survey, conducted in July 1994 prior to its proposed demolition. The building is a one and a half storey cottage, most of which was constructed of brick in the mid to late 18th century. Some earlier fabric was noted, however, including a wall constructed of mud and stud which was thought to date from the 17th century. This earlier fabric would suggest an earlier structure had formerly occupied the site, which was extensively rebuilt in the later 18th century. The survey identified a complex history of alterations to the later structure, including the conversion of part of the building to a butcher's shop in the 19th century. {3}{4} The building was demolished in late 1994, and was subsequently de-listed. {5}{6}
