Full Description
Former General Baptist chapel at Fleet Hargate. The first chapel on this site was built in 1764, for a congregation which originated in Holbeach in about 1681, as a branch of the Spalding church. This congregation met at Fleet from 1690 but also held meetings at Lutton and Gedney. The first chapel at Fleet was enlarged in 1782, 1803, 1830 and 1842, before being replaced by the present building in 1876, when the adjacent Sunday School structrue was also constructed (see MLI127865). The current structure has a tall three-bay gabled front of brick with stone dressings and tall round arched bays enclosing two tiers of windows. There are several gravemarkers in the burial ground that date to the late 18th and early 19th century (see MLI127868). {1}{2}
The chapel, Sunday School and burial ground were visited in 2010. The chapel was built of red brick with gault brick and ashlar dressings, and features a gabled roof with a slate covering. The raised gable has stone copings and kneelers and a stepped cornice in gault brick. The structure is built in a similar style as the adjacent Sunday School, though with slightly more ornamentation. {3}{4}{5}
The last service at Fleet Baptist Church was held in early 2025, and the building is now closed. {6}
