Full Description

Cropmarks of a probable Bronze Age round barrow cemetery with a potential Neolithic mortuary enclosure, on land to the north-west of Scopwick. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. The visible cropmarks comprise a circular, double-ditched barrow measuring roughly 28m in diameter, and with traces of a central mound (at TF 0627 5822). To the north-west of this are two single-ditched circular barrows, both roughly 20m in diameter (at TF 0622 5825 and TF 0620 5832), with a smaller 8m diameter barrow lying between them (at TF 0620 6828). Fragments of further ditches to the immediate west of these barrows may potentially form part of a former enclosure. To the east of the barrows is a rectangular ditched enclosure, measuring roughly 32m by 20m, and thought to eb the potential remains of a Neolithic mortuary enclosure. Cropmarks of an internal sub-circular enclosure, measuring roughly 10m in diameter, show inside the western end of the rectilinear enclosure. A ditch cutting across the rectilinear feature is thought to form part of a later, overlying field system (see MLI87417). There is the possibility that a mid 19th century reference to a probable round barrow located near Scopwick may be refering to this site (see MLI86755). {1}
