Full Description

A note in Oliver's 1846 publication refers to a 'conical hill in this parish at the intersection of the ancient road from Lincoln to Sleaford and a crossroad called Bradley Lane. It bears the familiar name of Wilmore Hill, and is remembered by old people now living, as being of great diameter and more than 20ft high. It was levelled at the enclosure, and found to be composed of clay and cineration remains, with abundant marks of cremation.' Wilmore Hill cannot now be identified with certainty, but a resident of Kirkby Green believed the name once applied to an area centred at TF 066 583, now occupied by The Firs Farm. Doubt has been cast on much of Oliver's interepretations and reports, and the exact site being described is not certainly known, although a probable barrow cemetery is recorded on land to the west (see MLI87416). The cropmarks of a further probable round barrow are also recorded to the east (see MLI127869). {1}{2}{3}
