Remains of the shrunken medieval settlement of Mawthorpe, identified as earthworks and cropmarks around the present Mawthorpe House. The remains include a number of former toft and croft boundaries, visible as a number of conjoined, rectilinear ditched enclosures in this area with further fragments of former boundaries adjacent. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1} The village's name of Mawthorpe is thought to derive from the Old Norse personal name 'Malti' and the Old Danish word 'thorp', meaning 'Malti's secondary settlement'. {2} Most of the former earthworks appear to have now been levelled by modern agricultural activity, as seen on more recent Google Maps aerial photographic imagery. Remains of the medieval settlement activity still potentially survive as below-ground archaeology though. {3}
