Full Description

PRN 62272 St Chad's church was built in the 12th century with additions and alterations through to the 15th century; it was restored in the 19th century. The Church is built of coursed limestone rubble and ashlar, with slate roofs. The tower is of four stages with an octagonal spire. The south aisle has a double piscina (basin), and the 19th century font is octagonal. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} St Chad's west tower is mainly Early English, with a late Decorated or Perpendicular doorway, and an early Decorated tower arch. The rest of the church is Decorated, apart from the south doorway, thought to be late 13th century, and the Perpendicular clerestory. The arcades are of four bays and their roofline can be seen against the tower and chancel. John of Welbourn, treasurer of Lincoln Cathedral, who died in 1380, founded a chantry in the south aisle. The chancel was rebuilt in 1854. A Sanctus bell turret can be found on the east gable. The church was restored in 1884. {2} Stained glass in this church, some of which is in situ, dates to approximately 1350-63 AD. {3} The Chancel is said to have been rebuilt at a lower pitch than the original. The church has many carvings and gargoyles; among others, above the eastern window of the northern aisle there is a piper, a female figure and either a fish or a dragon. {4}
