Full Description

Cropmarks of a probable Bronze Age round barrow. The northernmost of two probable round barrows to the west of Bluestone Heath Road, Donington on Bain. Visible as a circular enclosure, defined by a single ditch measuring 20m in diameter. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}{2} The barrow is visible on more recent aerial photography as loosely defined cropmarks of a pennanular ditched enclosure with a gap to the west. There are hints of the circuit faintly completing the ring ditch, and also of an extension of the barrow to the west. This rough 'keyhole' shape is reminiscent of a neighbouring Neolithic long barrow (see MLI ) so it is possible that this may have originated as a small long barrow which was mutilated by a later Bronze Age round barrow at the eastern end. However the definition is not clear enough to give a certain Neolithic date. It is also worth noting that the soilmark for the compacted surface of the internal mound is also a 'keyhole' shape in plan. {3}
