Cropmarks of a Neolithic long barrow, to the north of Middle Farm, Edlington. Visible as an oval-shaped enclosure, defined by a single ditch orientated north-west to south-east and with maximum visible internal dimensions measuring 53.5m by 19.5m. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. Lies in close proximity to a later triangular enclosure of probable Iron Age or Roman date (see MLI88347). {1}{2} This long barrow is situtated on level ground, on a gently sloping west escarpment. It is aligned north-north-west to south-south-east, with the long axis running parallel to the contours. It is an enclosure of oblong form (the full extent of which does not show on the eastern side), with convex shaped terminals. {3}{4} The long barrow at this location was scheduled in April 2024, following confirmation of its survival as a buried feature by a geophysical survey, conducted in 2018. It is visible on aerial photographs as a partial, though clearly defined cropmark of the western side of the enclosure ditch. The eastern continuation of the barrow is not visible as cropmarks and was not detected durng the geophysical survey. It may be that this eastern side was masked by a former field boundary (visible on previous versions of the Ordnance Survey map), and/or that ploughing in this eastern field may have been more rigourous than in the western field. Valuable archaeological deposits will be preserved on the buried ground surface and in the fills of the ditch. These will provide rare information concerning the dating and construction of the monument and the sequence of mortuary practices at the site. The same deposits will also retain environmental evidence illustrating the nature of the landscape in which the monument was set. {5}
