Full Description

A late prehistoric (Iron Age) and Romano-British settlement site at Aswardby, including cropmark enclosures, hut circles, trackways, and a temple. The site is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} The scale and morphology of the extensive site visible in cropmarks, at Aswardby, suggests it is a Romano-British settlement of a similar site to those at Nettleton or Ludford, for example. It shows the characteristic accretion of enclosures along a network of unmetalled roadways typical of other such settlements. It covers about 20 hectares and there is a possible temple enclosure where the lanes in the settlement fork. A sparse scatter of Roman greyware pottery and a mortarium rim fragment dated from about AD250 to AD350, during a walk over the field in 1993. {6} A watching brief on a drainage pipe trench conducted in 2009 revealed a series of five north-south aligned ditches at the southern end of the settlement. Roman pottery dating to the late 1st to early 2nd Century AD was recovered from three of the ditches. {7}{8}
