Full Description

Cropmarks of a possible Neolithic long barrow, to the east of Fordington House Farm. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1} This long barrow is located on a false crest, adjacent to the Bluestone Heath ridgeway. It is aligned on a north-west to south-east axis, with the long axis running parallel to the contours, and measures roughly 28m by 12m. It takes the form of an oval-shaped enclosure, defined by arcuate ditches, with the southern ditch showing as a more prominent mark. Opposed gaps show on the western and eastern sides. An anomaly visible in the interior may be geological in origin, whilst a disturbance at the western end of the south ditch appears more pit-like. Field walking conducted over the site in July 1989 revealed no surface traces or finds. {2}{3} More recent analysis of the aerial photography for this area identified this feature as cropmarks, though cast doubt on its interpretation as a long barrow. The cropmarks showed an irregular oval enclosure, possibly defined by a ditch with an inner bank, measuring roughly 28m by 18m. It lies amongst the mottling of a linear cropmark formed by the underlying geology and may be part of that formation. It lies to the north of the site of a more certain long barrow (see MLI43174). {4}{5}
