Full Description

Earthworks of a probable medieval moated site, fishponds and associated water channels, to the south of Great Steeping. The earthworks are visible both on the ground and on aerial photographs taken of the site. The moat is rectangular in shape, measuring approximately 60m by 65m, and is in a reasonably good condtion, although its north-western corner has been filled in. A possible entrance gap is thought to have existed on its northern side. A series of at least four fishponds lie to the south-west of the moasted site. A number of associated water channels lie to the north, east and south of the moat, connecting the various larger bodies of water. A further water course extends from the west of the fishponds, running roughly southwards for approximately 400m, conencting the whole site to the River Steeping. {1}{2}{3} Whilst the remains of the moated site, fishponds and most of the associated water channels survive very well, the majority of the earthworks for the water channel running south from the fishponds and connecting with the River Steeping appear to have been levelled by modern agricultural ploughing and activity, as seen on the Google Maps aerial imagery layer and on recent LiDAR data. {4}{5}
