Full Description

St James church retains Decorated and Perpendicular features. {1}{2}{3} The church was founded in 1348 as a college of priests by Lord Willoughby, with additions in the 16th century, and was partially rebuilt in 1879 by W. Bassett Smith. {4} The tower is built of the unusual Spilsby sandstone (also known as greenstone). The churchyard contains several mature trees and the war memorial is situated in the north western corner. {5} A watching brief in 2021 during repairs to the southern boundary wall and bank recorded three disarticuled partial sets of human remains, and a possible grave cut extending north to south beyond the current extent of the burial ground. Evidence was also recorded for a possible former land surface, with the current ground level being made ground. {6}{7}
