Full Description

The Church of St Helen has Early English four bay arcades and the west and east lancets of the north aisle may also be original. Otherwise most of the exterior is of 1881. {1}{2} A parish church dating from the 13th century which underwent alterations in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was restored in 1830, 1853 by Fowler, 1863 and 1881. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {3} Parts of the church tower foundations were exposed in June 2007, during archaeological monitoring of the excavation of investigative trial pits. The foundations associated with the tower buttresses appeared substantial and extended below the level of investigation. A pit containing limestone chippings, thought to have also possibly formed part of the foundation deposits for the church tower, was recorded. {4}{5} New services installed in 2019 were accompanied by further works, with 19th and 20th century alterations recorded which may relate to fixing damp. The tiles inside the church were found to be bonded with a weak mortar and sand bedding overlaying a mixed layer of mortar and clay with flecks of brick, chalk, and pea-grit. Two pieces of brick and a single sherd of 12th to 13th century pottery were recorded, although the pot was deemed likely to be intrusive rather than dating the layer. {6}{7}
