Full Description

IN CHAPEL FIELD IS THE SITE OF A POSSIBLE BUILDING. A SCATTER OF ROMANO- BRITISH TO LATE MEDIEVAL POTTERY AND ALSO MEDIEVAL TILES WAS FOUND ALONG WITH SOME FRAGMENTS OF SPILSBY SANDSTONE. A CISTERCIAN WARE CUP (A DRAWING OF WHICH IS IN THE PARISH FILE) PROBABLY ALSO CAME FROM THIS SITE, SEE PRN 40769 AND 40772. {1} THERE IS A POSSIBLE LINK WITH A DESERTED MEDIEVAL VILLAGE PRN 40770. {4} BIRKWOOD CHAPELRY IS MENTIONED IN DOMESDAY BOOK. IN 1158 HENRY II CONFIRMED TO DURHAM PRIORY THE CHURCH OF KIRKBY 'CUM CAPELLA DE BIRCHEWDA (CHARTERS OF THE DEAN AND CHAPTER OF DURHAM, 3, i, REGAL 1.) {3}{4}
