Full Description
A large earthwork mound lies in this area to the north of Wragby. The mound has been ploughed and flattened, to the point where Phillips described it as 'so flattened that it would be better called a platform'. The mound lies adjacent to the suspected line of a Roman road, and has been thought to most likely represent the remains of a degraded Roman barrow, although earlier origins may also be possible. The mound is depicted on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map, where it is named 'named 'Gallows Hill', suggesting a later, post-medieval re-use of the mound as the site of a gallows. {1}{2}{3}
The feature now lies under an area of woodland plantation, and cannot be seen on the current Google Maps satellite imagery layer, although it can be discerned on recent LiDAR data for this area. It appears as a roughly circular earthwork, measuring approximately 30m in diameter. {4}{5}
