Full Description

Farmhouse dating from c.1600, with later 17th, 19th and minor 20th century alterations. Constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, and features stone-coped slate roofs with single gable brick chimney stack and single brick ridge chimney stack to rear. The building is laid to a T-shaped plan, and is of two storeys with garrets. The irregular three-bay front has a chamfered stone plinth, and an off-centre blocked doorway with moulded stone surround, four-centred arched head and cornice. To the rear are 19th and 20th extensions in brick and stone. Inside, the right-hand room has a moulded stone fire surround with flat head, 17th oak panelling, full height on one wall, to dado height on other walls, and a chamfered beam with shield shaped ogee plaque. The dog leg staircase has stout bobbin balusters with moulded handrail. The walls flanking the stair are timber framed with substantial posts and rail. In the right hand bedroom is a moulded stone fire surround, matching the room below, with deeply moulded cornice which supports a plaster panel of c.1600 character. A central fluted pilaster, supporting a figure, is flanked by single half round columns on decorative plinth. In the left hand panel is a scene of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. In the right hand panel - Abraham and the sacrifice of Isaac are depicted, with a raised panel inscribed 'Abraham his Faith'. The figures are in relief and in contemporary costume, with substantial traces of the original colour remaining. To either side of the overmantle are sections of frieze with inhabited vinescroll. The chamfered ceiling girder and plastered ceiling conceal the top of the frieze and overmantle.
