Full Description
The earthwork remains of a medieval settlement at Lower Bitchfield were observed during a site visit in 1992 {1}, and are visible in aerial photographs {2}{3} and LIDAR {4}. The NMP transcription shows several rectilinear enclosures, with LIDAR showing ridge and furrow ploughing and a possible hollow, likely comprising a field system. It is unclear to what extent earthwork features in the locale are of medieval date, and which may relate to the post-medieval hall and manor house.
A desk based assessment including a site visit undertaken in 2022 suggested that building platforms may still be present on the site {5}, and an associated scheme of geophysical survey suggested the survival of below ground deposits of uncertain nature {6}{7}.
