Excavations in the north-west sector of the Roman town of Ancaster revealed the remains of a post-medieval lime kiln. The location is marked on the Ordnance Survey maps as a tower. 1 quadrant of the lime kiln was excavated - it was a circular structure, with an internal diameter of 12.5ft, with the lower part constructed in large pit. Limestone rubble was in the base and a rubble back fill overlied this. A sherd of 17th century pottery was found between the pit and the wall of the kiln, suggesting a date for the construction of the kiln. {1}
