Full Description
Late 17th century road bridge, built of ashlar stone with coursed limestone rubble parapets. It is a triple-span bridge with double-stepped, semi-circular arches and two stepped triangular cutwaters with facetted tops on each side. The total span of the three arches is 30 yards. The splayed side walls are 13ft apart, and have plain ashlar copings, though these are thought to have likely been rebuilt, with the cutwaters thought to have originally had recesses at road level. The bridge of 'Offynton near Stamford' is mentioned in several of the 13th and 15th century Uffington charters dealing with the Convent of Newstead. This documentary evidence would suggest the presence of an earlier bridge at Uffington, possibly on the same site.
