Full Description
A series of three large former gravel pits of later post-medieval date, depicted on historic mapping of this land to the west of Jerusalem, Skellingthorpe. Only the southernmost pit is depicted on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map (published in 1886).
All three pits are shown on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map (published in 1906), although the southernmost and central pits are labelled as 'Old Gravel Pits', suggesting they had gone out of use by the time of the survey. The northernmost pit is labelled as a 'Gravel Pit', however, suggesting it may still have been in active use at the time of survey.
The 3rd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map (published in 1920), shows that the workings of the northernmost pit had merged into the central pit. It labels all the pits as 'Old Gravel Pits' though, suggesting that working of the site had ceased by this time. {1}{2}{3}
