Full Description

A large spread of briquetage representing debris from a nearby salt-making site was recorded on land to the south of Anchor Lane, Ingoldmells, during geophysical survey and trial trenching in 2014. The recovered briquetage was typical of Late Iron Age-Early Roman saltern fabrics. Immediately to the south of the spread, the geophysical survey identified a number of probable tidal creeks which likely provided the site with salt water. A layer of clay containing significant quantities of cockle shells and further saltern debris suggests that the area was tidally inundated at some time in the Roman period, leading to the abandonment of the site. {1}{2}{3}
