Full Description

A cluster of mid to late Iron Age activity was noted in the north of a site subject to geophysical surveyin 2014 {1} and trial trenching excavation in 2015 {2}, although it was noted that the features did not show very well in the geophysical survey likely due to magnetic noise. A curvilinear ditch with three postholes, along with several runs of straight linear ditches were recorded, with the excavators suggesting a probable roundhouse 6 to 7m in diameter with associated enclosures. A total of 70 sherds of Iron Age pottery including shell gritted wares and scored ware were recorded along with in excess of 30 pieces of fired clay, unidentifiable burnt bone, and a fragment of hearth/furnace slag from iron working. Environmental remains from ditch fill deposits were considered to represent the dumping of hearth waste.
