Full Description
An Iron Age field system including agricultural enclosures in at least two phases has been excavated at Baston, including a prominent entranceway for the enclosure system. {1}{2}{5}{6}
Environmental sampling in conjunction with the animal bones identified during excavation are suggestive of grassland with horse and cattle grazing, along with sheep/goat. The land to the north of the main boundary ditch identified was considered to be dryer than the lower, marshier land to the south which may have been a factor in its placement. Two undated rectilinear enclosures were excavated at the site and while undated were thought to be of likely Iron Age date, being used as stock corrals.
The features were clear in geophysical survey results. {3}{4}
