Full Description

A former meeting house of the Society of Friends, built in 1775 to replace an earlier meeting house at Wainfleet St Mary (see MLI90650). The new building was located to the rear of a group of five cottages that had also been constructed by the Society of Friends in the previous year (see MLI91610). The meeting was discontinued in 1838. Since its closure for worship, the building has been used by a number of bodies including the Women's Institute and the Liberal Party. It now serves as a private garage, for which the interior has been wholly stripped and the front wall completely rebuilt. {1}{2} The former Friends Meeting House was surveyed as part of a survey of nonconformist chapels in East Lindsey District. The building is of red brick with a gabled Welsh slate roof, and has tumbled brickwork on the gables. It was built in 1775 at a cost of £70, and replaced an earlier Meeting House built in Wainfleet St Mary. {3}{4}
