Site of what is thought to have been a former dovecote at Dovecote Lane, Coleby possibly built on or near the site of an earlier dovecote mentioned in a 16th century will. The will also makes reference to a former malt kiln possibly on or near the same site. Although not labelled as a dovecote, the building is clearly marked on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map as a rectangular structure. A photograph of the building, thought to have been taken c.1900, shows the structure as an isolated farm building, attached to the field wall to the north of Dovecote Lane. The photograph is of poor resolution, but seems to show the building as constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with a pitched roof, possibly covered by pantiles. No details of any bird holes or nesting boxes can be discerned but a structure in the centre of the roofline is suggestive of a possible dovecote tower. The building is no longer extant, and is thought to have been demolished at some time around 1950. {1}{2}{3}
