Description

A geophysical survey by ground penetrating radar and magnetometry was conducted on land at Maidenwell Manor, Maidenwell, prior to submission of a planning application for residential development. Ground penetrating radar was used in the northern half of the site, where the potential for surviving building foundations was considered higher. Possible foundations were encountered in an irregular pattern around the edge of the site, as well as immediately to the south of the current manor building. This corresponds with a previous phase of the manor seen on historic maps, though the signals may also represent demolition rubble or some other modern interference. The magnetometry survey revealed an L-shape band of magnetic disturbance at the western and southern extents of the survey area, corresponding with the known location of a former moat visible on the 1770 plan of Maidenwell. A series of rectilinear anomalies were encountered across the survey area - these may be the result of buried paths for a former formal garden. {1} Subsequent trial trenching in the northern half of the site did not find any trace of the possible foundations, and the only structural element identified was a chalk post pad immediately to the south of the current house.
