Description

A magnetic gradiometer survey was conducted on land adjacent to Coronation Farm, Burgh Road West, Skegness, to inform the proposed installation of a solar farm and associated infrastructure. A significant number of positive and negative linear and curvilinear anomalies were detected across the site. These were interpreted as likely natural palaeochannels, although an archaeological origin was not ruled out. Two large areas of dipolar response were assumed to be backfilled modern pits, though again an archaeological origin was not discounted. A number of smaller dipolar area responses were interpreted as possible pits or hollows. {1} Subsequent trial trenching on the site (see ELI14029) revealed one of the two areas of dipolar response to be a large mound sealed by alluvial deposits, containing large quantities of briquetage associated with salterns positively dated as Roman. The other was a 17m long spread of briquetage rubble containing a burnt clay oven base on a foundation more briquetage.
