Description

A magnetic gradiometer survey was conducted to determine the archaeological potential of land at Queen Street, Spilsby, prior to any potential development. Two positive linear anomalies were identified, one of which clearly aligns with a post-Medieval field boundary seen on historic mapping. The other, an east-west linear anomaly in the centre of the site, was interpreted as a possible ditch, though only a 10m long section was identified. A number of small isolated positive responses towards the west of the site were interpreted as possible pits or postholes. There were a number of areas of bipolar response, most of which were caused by visible modern features. The easternmost area was visible as a dip in the landscape and assumed to be caused by a change in geology. {1} A subsequent programme of trial trenching confirmed the presence of the post-medieval boundary ditch in the northeast corner of the site. The area of bipolar response to the east was revealed to be a series of post-medieval waste pits. A series of Roman ditches and gullies not identified in the survey were also revealed by the trial trenching. The small east-west linear anomaly was not investigated.
