Description

An archaeological evaluation consisting 27 trial trenches was undertaken by Archaeological Project Services on land at Towngate East, Market Deeping between November 2010 and January 2011. Evidence of late Iron Age and Roman settlement in the southern portion of the site was revealed, which had been identified during previous geophysical surveying (ELI14508). The settlement showed evidence of a long span of domestic occupation through the Iron Age and Roman periods, with evidence of expansion to the north and the inclusion of a new trackway. Finds of mainly Iron Age and Roman pottery were uncovered, the assemblages identified as providing potential significant insight to ceramic developmetns during the Iron Age and transition to Roman periods. Ceramic building material and stone was also uncovered, indicating the prescence of a structure nearby. Also recovered was briquetage of Iron Age origin, indicating the production and trade of salt. {1}{2}
