Full Description

Former inn now public house at 19 Watergate. The exact time of the building's construction is uncertain, though a 17th or early 18th century date is thought possible. The establishment is named as the Black Dog in a local newspaper article of May 1777. The former inn has its principal, east range orientated north to south and runing parallel to Watergate, and has a linear rear range projecting to the west, which likely provided stabling and accommodation for visitors. The overall form of the building appears to have changed little since the late 19th century, though some 20th century alterations are evident. The principal eastern range is of two storeys, with the walls rendered to the front, though limestone walls visible in the carriage entrance may indicate the primary building material. The steeply pitched roof is of clay pantiles, with two brick chimney stacks. The rear ranges are of brick, and also feature pitched pantile roofs.
