Full Description

An early nineteenth century house in red brick with a slate roof. The building has two gable chimney stacks, with the gables rendered and coped. The house is on two storeys in three bays. The centrally positioned doorway has a decorative, panelled door and fanlight with radiating glazing bars, a fluted and reeded reveal, and moulded surround with impost and key blocks. The key blocks are decorated with a carved lion. Either side of the door are single glazing bar sashes with margin lights with 3 similar sashes above. All sashes have flush wedge lintels. Attached to the southern side of the house is a late 19th century conservatory with a moulded ashlar plinth supporting the wood and glazed walls and roof. The southern elevation of the conservatory has a doorway with double doors and a pediment over, supported on a single pair of brackets. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Roman Lodge was the subject of a programme of historic building survey and appraisal, carried out in 2008. The complex comprises a two storey block, with a wing on its western side, all with slate roofs. There is a large conservatory on the south side of the house and a single storey block to the north. The brickwork used in the core north-south range is Flemish bond, while that of the west wing is English Garden Wall bond. Examination of the bricks used in the walls of a cellar situated beneath the main block revealed them to be different to those used elsewhere in the house, which suggests an earlier date, possibly as a survival from previous structures identified on a map of 1792-3. The cellar had two rooms (both with fireplaces) which might have served as servants quarters and perhaps, in part, as a kitchen. The main north-south block of the house was probably constructed during the period 1800-1810, and is typically Georgian in its symmetry and plan form, as well as in the character of the eastern façade. This part of the house had two ground floor rooms flanking a central hallway, with two first floor bedrooms separated by a landing. The west wing is an extension, but the bricks are similar to those used in the original block and it is likely that the wing was in existence by 1825. The wing has two downstairs rooms, the larger containing a large fireplace, suggesting original use as a kitchen, possibly as part of a service wing; the smaller room is now used as a kitchen. The wing has one upstairs bedroom. A utility room added to the north side of the west wing is later 20th century, while a modern two storey extension is built into the angle between the west wing and the original house. The large, glazed conservatory on the southern side of the house is late 19th century in date, and is said to have been removed from a country house 40 years previously (information from the owner's son) to be re-erected at its current location. The large single storey block to the north of the house is probably an original part of the complex and may have been used for stabling or storage. {1}{2} The Coach House (Church Farm), Tydd St. Mary. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard of T plan. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Located within or in association with a village. Large modern sheds are located to the side of the site. {4}
